Asian Gazpacho from Teaism

Profuse thanks to Linda Neumann of Teaism for sharing this delightfully cold, fresh recipe with us.

Serves 8.

Ingredients
2 large cucumbers, peeled and seeded
2 large very ripe tomatoes
1 small red onion, peeled
2 jalapeno peppers, stems removed
4 garlic cloves, peeled
1 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled
1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
juice of 2 limes
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp sambal olek hot sauce or Tabasco
1 cup olive oil
salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup fresh basil leaves
1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves
1/2 cup mint leaves

Directions
Roughly chop the cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, jalapenos, garlic, and ginger. Wash, dry, and roughly chop the basil, cilantro, and mint. Working in batches if necessary, puree cucumber, tomato, and onion. Add jalapeno, garlic, and ginger and puree. Add vinegar, lime juice, soy sauce, sambal olek, and olive oil. Puree. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add basil, cilantro and mint and pulse to chop. Put mixture in bowl and cover with saran wrap. Refrigerate at least 4 hours; optimally overnight.

Serve with bread or croutons.

Note to our industrious readers: please let us know if and when you take a crack at this recipe! We'd love to know how it turns out.

Brazilian footwear label Melissa commissioned Pritzker Prize winning architect Zaha Hadid to design a serious pair of shoes.

And I mean serious.

AGH! These are so cool.

Sea Town Chic

via flickr's pud pud and selfservice

APC's Fall collection has premiered, layered with lots o'plaid, nautical details, and weathered ankle boots. And we love it. It just makes me want to watch the sea with some hot toddies. Ok, must imagine a little harder in code orange heat.
Added bonus: these looks are easily imitable with vintage!

Bagels for the soul.

This week's flavor: salt.

A crazy-ass Philip Johnson building.

Arsenic and Old Lace screens tonight on the Green.

Tuesday, July 29th, go to Second Story books in Dupont before their big ol' 20% percent off everything sale ends on Thursday. (Looks like there are some deals to be had at the Rockville store, too.)

Wednesday, July 30th is the second-to-last day of Philip Johnson: Architecture as Art, which has been at the Kreeger Museum -- which he designed -- since March.

Thursday, July 31st, hear National Building Museum curator Martin Moeller talk about The Origins of the Bauhaus.

Friday, August 1st Adams Morgan's Dahlak hosts Moneytown for the second time! (We posted about this event's inaugural night two weeks ago, but never made it out. We're definitely going to check it out this time! How we could we not after listening to the song on their MySpace?

Saturday, August 2nd through Sunday, August 3rd, take advantage of the Richmond Big Flea Market! (We know -- it's kind of a haul. Listopad loves Richmond for its many delicious restaurants and the cute boys we always see running around, so we advocate the trip.)

It'll be OK, Betty.

I doubt that anyone needs to be reminded that the second season of Mad Men commences tonight at 10 pm on AMC. This cable-less girl will be in her parent's basement, eating pesto and crying over everyone's outfits. I can never decide whose I like the best.

Rachel is so haute.

Peggy has this weird Chloe Sevigny aura that I am obsessed with.

Betty is just, like, perfect -- but in a way that I am not totally crazy about.

Joan had this one really great necklace that made several appearances last season.

I know that we are supposed to be distracted by her hubba-hubba vibe, but what I really appreciate is the simplicity of Joan's outfits.

Midge, of course, kicks ass.

I think my favorite, though, is Helen Bishop.

I think it's because she is divorced, and therefore badass. Maybe it's her vaguely-menswear tendencies?

Can we take a vote? Who do you guys like the best?

Images from my trip to Montana, Butte and Glacier National Park, last week. I came across so many amazing antiques and the beauty in Montana and Glacier is not to be missed.

Listopad Music: Flowers/Icehouse

Flowers, later renamed Icehouse, were Australia's biggest pop act in the early 1980's.

This band is inspiring for me on a very deep spiritual level.

Keep it Up

Sorry for the cheese-y title, I couldn't help myself. So, Keep is an awesome, woman-run, sweatshop-free, company whose shoes I love. Now they are going to be making clothes. So awesome!

Beautiful Bounty

I feel very grateful that I can walk out the door every Saturday morning and in a few moments have access to fresh farmers' market fare. Luckily D.C. is situated so that we have access to great markets practically every day of the week for a good portion of the year. The Mount Pleasant market offers a wide variety of produce as well as dairy and baked goods. One of my favorite vendors there is Audia's Farm, which alongside herbs and potatoes, sells Kathy Audia's homemade dry tea mixes, preserves, and handpicked wildflower boquets. This market also features an "ATM"--if you are out of cash but have a debit card, you can buy tokens which are good for the entire season.

Aside from the Mount Pleasant market, which runs from May through November, there are two Sunday year-round markets in Dupont Circle and Takoma Park. The Foggy Bottom market on Wednesdays is great for mid-week produce, and if you miss that one there is a market in Penn Quarter on Thursdays. For more information on these and other markets, visit www.freshfarmmarket.org. For information on even more markets, as well as Community Supported Agriculture in D.C., visit www.localharvest.org.

For a million good reasons to buy food directly from farmers, read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, Carlo Petrini's Slow Food Nation, and Alice Waters' cookbook The Art of Simple Food.

Constanzas make me nervous.

You guys remember Bobby Trendy, right?

(Evil Beet Gossip)

He was Anna Nicole Smith's interior decorator.

"I tell other people what is wrong with them—I teach lessons every day." Mr. Trendy bragged of dining nightly on filet mignon; does he fear mad-cow disease? "I repel all diseases."

This quote is from a 2002 NY Observer column penned by the fucking hysterical Simon Doonan after an extensive interview with Trendy (I am trying to be journalistic by using his last name, but ... yeah), in which the decorator drank champagne and "implored the cameraman to 'photograph my beautiful butthole.'"

Please read it!

Love Letters

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend Listopad your ears. We're plotting a new feature that we're really excited about.

We're obsessed with all things vintage and secondhand. This should be obvious by now. We shop a lot and we find a lot of beautiful things, both for ourselves and for our shopping parties. We're assuming that if you read this blog, it's because you like shopping for beautiful things, too, and you freak out as much as we do when you come across them. We're shoppers that appreciate the challenge of finding genuinely cool and interesting things in an economy where cookie-cutter looks are served to the masses, and we want to celebrate the fact that individuality is accessible—if you know where to look.

We know that you guys know where to look, and we know how exciting it is when you find something really unique. Why not use us a platform to shout it to the world? We want to see what our readers are finding. The next you're at a thrift store, flea market, vintage shop, or consignment boutique, and you find something—an item of clothing, a weird little tchotchke, a full set of La Fonda del Sol Bandas Goblets, anything—take a pic and send it to us along with a description of the item. Tell us where you found it, why it caught your eye, how it's going to change your life, or any other information that you feel is pertinent. Send us your love letters, kids! We love hearing from you!

I Wanna Be Your Full-Time Woman

Ok so I might be playing into the capitalist empire by promoting the song Target is using in their current commercials, but Dolly's a classic--and a musical genius. Check out the boho chic before it was chic here. Of course none of it can compete with 1974 Dolly:

Points of interest: her wig, that color of polyester, her awesome eyeshadow. Don't forget kids, plastic surgery is forever!

Listopad Summer Sneak Peek

We're getting really excited about our upcoming event and wanted to share with you a peek into our summer offerings. See them in person July 26 outside of Red Onion!

Wearing History

Summer's not over yet! You can still justify more hot weather shoes ;) These espadrilles have been perfected over 70 years, and the colors get better and better. They even have a wikipedia page, so you know they are serious. Available online.

Bagels for the soul

This week's flavor: poppyseed!

Wednesday, July 16th: Peter Eisenman is the Louis I. Kahn Professor of Architecture at Yale. He wrote a book called Ten Canonical Buildings about incidents of architecture that blew enough minds to change things. He will talk about it at the Corcoran tonight!

Thursday, July 17th finds many things going on within itself! The Apes play Fort Reno and Two-Lane Blacktop screens at Video Americain.

Friday, July 18th through Sunday, July 20th, you will have the unique opportunity to experience the batshittery that is Baltimore's Whartscape! So much essential viewing/listening/thrashing: Food For Animals, Ponytail, WZT HEARTS - there are seriously like 100 bands playing. (Ed. note: I might be exaggerating but not by much!)

Merrily we roll along

Dolce and Gabbana is a party animal.

Frenchy Friday

Now that Americans are starting to awake from their post-9/11, post-Freedom Fries haze, we are finally beginning to accept once more that France is awesome.

Before Bushie, didn't all smart, tasteful Americans adore France? Of course we did, and for too many reasons to name. Their language, their thinness, their smoking habit, their film, their detached coolness, their health care, their rejection of American stupidity-- France is so over it, and we love that about them.

So in preparation for Bastille Day on Monday, I'm celebrating the little piece of France I love most: its pop music!

Our first chanson is from the sexalicious Quebec-born Mylene Farmer, who is one of France's top-selling singers of all time. Here is her first single, released in 1984:

Bagels for the Soul

This week’s flavor: cinnamon. HOT.

Christine makes loving fun. Have you ever seen better bangs?!

On Tuesday, July 8th, peep a free talk at the National Building Museum: “Planning for America's Future Infrastructure, Economic Development and Environmental Challenges.” (I know this sounds a teeny bit dry, but this is the kind of shit we need to stay on top of, am I right?)

Wednesday, July 9th, catch flailing, maniacal, and jaw-droppingly posi punk posse No Age at Floristree in Baltimore.

Friday, July 11th is the inaugural night of Moneytown, a new party that promises to bring the fucking funk. It’s at Dahlak, which also has amazing Ethiopian food.

Celebrate Christine McVie’s birthday on Saturday, July 12th, by donning your best ethereal gear and belting out “You Make Loving Fun” alone in your apartment. (I have never done this. (Not.))

Sunday, July 12th, RJ Cooper of Vidalia will be at the Dupont Circle FRESHFARM market, doing chef-ly things.

Yay! Next Listopad Event

Hallo, we are so so happy to announce our next Listopad Vintage event...it's a Sidewalk Sale with Red Onion!

Expect lemonade, straw hats, sun dresses, witty t-shirts, wine and more. We'll be posting sneak peeks into our summer gear up until the party, so check back!

Slushy summer

Summer. Summer. Summer summer summer! Even though the weather this weekend was less than stellar, the vibes are still present. The city is VERDANT and cutoffs (high-waisted, bien sur!) are in full effect.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to fully embrace the season by making this deliciously chilly frozen ginger lemonade.

(In order to hydrate a larger crowd, I have been doubling the amount of water and ginger, and using three cups of lemon juice instead of two, and it still packs a serious punch. I would encourage folks to mess with the proportions a bit. It also goes great with a splash or two--or seven--of vodka!)

The Osmonds

I am 36 years behind this one, but color me shocked. Who knew there was a moment in their history when the Osmonds rocked? HARD?

Sneaker Freaker

Remember those S/S 07 Dries sneaker wedges that were awesome?

These Keds do it for me too, at a much cheaper price point ($60!). Plus, linen is the best fabric of all time.

Object Lust

Tsuyumi Panama Hat from Bird with knit baubles! This would look real swell on top of a vintage jumper.
